Time has seriously flown by. Just like that, March is almost over! Isn’t that crazy?! Some days, I forget that it’s 2018… The spring season reminds me of bright-colored foods, green salads and barbecue flavors. Growing up, having barbecues in the spring was a thing at my house! The cool outdoor breeze, warm weather and more hours of daylight is one of the best times for a BBQ party in my opinion, in addition to summer nights!
First of all, is it barbeque or barbecue? I spell it both ways depending on how I feel. I’ll stick to barbecue/BBQ to keep it consistent.
Barbecue is one of my sauces/flavors. I like it on pizza, as a dip and even in burgers! I’ve been craving burgers so I decided to stop by 365 Whole Foods in Santa Monica to grab ingredients to satisfy those cravings.
I purchased organic air-chilled chicken breast, whole-wheat buns, lettuce, onion, tomato, BBQ sauce ingredients and the guacamole ingredients. All these products were at such an affordable price and great quality!
I steamed the chicken and then poured the barbecue sauce to coat the chicken while it was still warm.
Here’s the chicken tossed and coated in the sauce. Not going to lie, I ate some chicken right out the bowl because it smell that good. Well.. part of cooking is tasting food along the way right?
Here are a few of the bagged items I got. I paired the BBQ chicken burger with a side salad and roasted sweet potatoes. If you didn’t know, I’m obsessed with sweet potatoes. When I’m down to 1 or 2 sweet potatoes at home, I literally feel depleted and need to restock. The boxed sweet potatoes here save me time and dishes to wash on a busy day. I threw them on a baking sheet with some avocado oil and salt – then I roasted them at 400F for 20 minutes. Quick, simple and delicious!
For the romaine salad, I tossed together the salad mix, shredded carrots, olive oil and balsamic vinegar. It was simple! I’m all about those quick and simple recipes. Less time, less clean-up but still delicious tasting.
I’ve come to conclusion that a burger is not complete without guacamole or avocado. Sandwiches and burgers are so much better with a form of avocado. Avocados are a great source of monounsaturated fats. Unlike saturated fats, monounsaturated fats are good for you and help your heart and brain!

Shredded BBQ Chicken and Guacamole Burger
Burger made on a whole wheat bun and shredded chicken breasts tossed in homemade barbecue sauce. Add in some guacamole and fresh veggies and it makes for the perfect delicious meal!
- 4 whole-wheat hamburger buns
- 1 lb chicken breast
- 1/2 cup bbq sauce recipe below
- 4 romaine lettuce leaves
- 4 slices tomato
- Handful of sliced and halved red onions
- 1 cup guacamole recipe below
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 4 ripe avocados
- 1 tbsp lime juice
- 1/2 cup chopped red onion
- 1/2 jalapeno - chopped
- 1/2 tsp salt
- dash of black pepper
In a medium pot, bring water to a boil.
Meanwhile, chop up chicken breast into smaller pieces.
Once boiling, reduce heat to low and add in chicken to cook for 6-8 minutes.
Shred chicken and place in a small bowl.
In a medium bowl, mix together all the barbecue sauce ingredients - ketchup, brown sugar, water, worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, paprika and garlic powder.
Add 1/2 cup of barbecue sauce to coat with chicken. Let it marinate for 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, make your guacamole by adding all ingredients into one bowl and mash together. Add salt and pepper to taste.
Assemble by toasting a whole-wheat burger bun and adding in romaine lettuce leaf, sliced tomato, shredded BBQ chicken, red onion and guacamole!
