Supplies for this mess-free ice cream painting craft
You will need:
- White cardstock
- Brown construction paper or brown cardstock
- Washable paint
- Scissors
- 2 sandwich-size zip-top bags or larger storage zip-top bags
- Tape
- Glue
- Red pom-poms
For our ice cream scoops, I used:
- 2 shades of purple washable paint and white washable paint for one scoop
- 2 shades of pink washable paint and white washable paint for the other scoop
You can use any paint colors your toddler loves.
How to prepare the ice cream painting craft
Start by cutting two ice cream cone shapes out of the brown paper. I added diagonal lines to each cone to give them that classic waffle cone look.
Next, cut two large ice cream scoop shapes out of the white cardstock.
Add small dots of washable paint all over each white ice cream scoop, keeping the colors slightly apart from one another.
For one scoop, I used two different shades of purple and white. For the second scoop, I used two shades of pink and white.
Carefully place each ice cream scoop inside its own zip-top bag and seal the bags securely.
Let your toddler paint
Tape the sealed bags down onto the table so they stay in place while your toddler paints.
Then let your toddler use their hands to press, pat, hit, squish, and smush the paint around inside the bag.
This was such a fun way for my toddler to explore the paint and mix the colors without actually touching the paint or making a mess.
There is no right or wrong way to do this part. Let your toddler move the paint around however they would like and enjoy watching the different colors blend together.
Putting the ice cream craft together
Once your toddler is finished painting, carefully remove the cardstock ice cream scoops from the bags and set them aside to dry completely.
After the paint is dry, glue each colorful ice cream scoop onto the top of a brown paper cone.
For the finishing touch, glue a red pom-pom onto the top of each ice cream scoop to look like a cherry on top.
