Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons baking soda
  • 4 to 6 drops food coloring
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar

Supplies:

  • 1 small cup
  • Aluminum foil
  • 1 large tray or baking sheet

Instructions

  • Place your small cup in the center of a large tray or baking sheet. I definitely recommend doing this activity over a tray because the volcano can overflow quickly once the reaction starts.
  • Cover the cup with aluminum foil, shaping the foil around the outside so it looks like a little volcano. Cut a hole in the top of the foil about the same size as the opening of the cup. Make sure the opening is large enough to easily add your ingredients.
  • Add 3 tablespoons of baking soda to the cup.
  • Next, add 4 to 6 drops of food coloring. Red or orange is fun if you want it to look more like lava, but any color works.
  • When you’re ready for the eruption, slowly pour in about 1/2 cup of white vinegar. The mixture will immediately start fizzing, bubbling, and overflowing out of your volcano.
