You can make delicious Chicken Katsu that is healthier but still crispy and juicy with this baked recipe! It’s lighter and so simple to make with just a few ingredients. I served it with a quick 3-ingredient katsu sauce I make ALL the time at home!

When it comes to comfort food, chicken katsu is a beloved favorite! Traditionally deep-fried to golden perfection, this Japanese dish is often paired with a rich curry sauce or served atop a bowl of steaming rice. This is a healthier, baked version that doesn’t compromise on flavor or crunch.
I remember eating katsu a few times when I went to Japan and it was perfection. I also tried a tonkatsu place in Hawaii called Tonkatsu Tamafuji which is a HUGE recommendation if you plan to make a visit any time soon! If you can make a reservation 2-3 months in advance, that would be ideal. Otherwise, plan to wait a long time or just go when they open!
I love Chicken Katsu because it’s simple to make & it’s a great source of protein!

Tips for Success:
- Even Coating: Make sure each piece of chicken is evenly coated in each layer (flour, egg, breadcrumbs) to achieve that perfect crunch.
- Crispiness: If you want an extra crispy coating, you can lightly toast the panko breadcrumbs in a dry skillet before using them for breading.
- Healthier Options: For an even lighter version, try using an air fryer. Follow the same steps but cook the chicken at 375°F (190°C) for about 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through.

This healthier baked chicken katsu is a fantastic way to enjoy a classic dish with less oil and fewer calories. It’s perfect for a family dinner, and even your kids will love the crispy, flavorful chicken. My toddler enjoys it! Plus, making it at home means you can control the ingredients and customize it to your liking.
Happy cooking, and enjoy this delightful twist on a favorite!
